In the development of sustainable agriculture, the conservation of biodiversity, including crop species and genetic diversity, represents a major component. Diversification is not only a development policy measure; it is also a philosophical principlethat has to be applied in development thinking. Currently, Viet Nam is promoting a strategy of export-oriented agriculture. This strategy has lead to the concentration of some main crops for export like rice, coffee, rubber, tea, cashew nut and black pepper, to specialization. Furthermore, this has also lead to less diversification of agriculture in key agricultural areas such as the Mekong Delta and the Central Highlands.
