North Pacific Council divides Gulf of Alaska cod fishery

The North Pacific Fishery Management Council approved a plan in December to divide the Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod quota among rival fishing sectors. The cod split generally mirrors the historical catch of the sectors, which include trawlers, longliners, and pot and jig boats. Fishermen in the various sectors braced for quite a battle going into the December meeting, and council Chairman Eric Olson confirmed after the final vote: "It was a pretty intense debate."
