Dismal hake: As of early November, there was still a decent amount of Pacific whiting left for the taking on the West Coast, thanks to small fish this year. About 80 percent of the nearly 191,000-metric-ton allocation had been caught by Nov. 5. Two factors helped the fishery's non-tribal sectors stretch the quota out closer to the end of the year, said Dave Jinks of the Mid-water Trawlers Cooperative.
