The satcom world is advancing rapidly, and the results are clearer and faster connections, coverage extending over broader seas, and best of all, lower prices. Overall performance and cost are dramatically improved, says Jeff Thomasson, sales and marketing director for OCENS Inc. of Seattle. Driving the action is Globalstar, based near San Jose, Calif. The company this summer is switching on a new satellite ground station in Wasilla, Alaska, just north of Anchorage. The company says the station will greatly improve satellite telephone coverage in Alaska and the Bering Sea as far north as 70 degrees.
