The North Pacific Fishery Management Council has published a booklet intended to explain fishing fleets to the public at large. "We've done a lot of analyses of the fleets, but we've never put something out that describes the fishing fleets in a way that is interesting to the general public," said Dave Witherell, deputy director of the council staff. He was joined by the North Pacific Council's Mark Fina and Michael Fey of the Alaska Fisheries Information Network to create the 72-page, full-color book. The council's Fishing Fleet Profiles highlights 17 different fisheries within broader sections, such as trawl gear, hook-and-line gear, pot gear, dredge gear, and charters. Charters include only sport halibut vessels managed by the council. Commercialhalibut boats are covered in the hook-and-line section. The writing is approachable, easily understood by the general public. There is a list of acronyms near the front of the book. Vessel owners have provided photos of many of the boats working under the council's regulations. The charts and graphs are excellent.
