As Congress and the Obama administration went about changing the face of Washington, D.C., it appeared that the Northwest and Alaska had strong voices in place — at least initially. In late February, President Obama nominated former Washington Gov. Gary Locke as the next secretary of commerce. Obama had previously nominated Jane Lubchenco of Oregon State University as NOAA administrator. She will report to the new secretary of commerce. And Jim Balsiger from Juneau remained acting director of NMFS,who reports to Lubchenco.
