The paint industry is a highly competitive market; manufacturers share the need to improve the production efficiency and flexibility at the same time in order to optimize profitability and incrase market share. Furthermore a growing number of products have to be produced in a large variety of colors and packaging within a short time. Historically the manufacturer has colored coating formulations with pigments dispersed in the coating vehicle. This approach required making many different tint pastes, in each vehicle system. Recent technological advances in pigment dispersing agents have allowed developing pre-manufactured colorants with a wide range of compatibility, such as waterborne and solventborne coatings.
