New-onset narcolepsy with cataplexy in a geriatric patient.

Most narcoleptics experience their first symptom(s) around puberty. A second, smaller peak occurs during the fourth and fifth decades. Onset as late as 72 has been reported but without cataplexy . Patients who develop cataplexy during later life have always had onset of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) several decades earlier .We report a 74-year-old man with new-onset narcolepsy with cataplexy. He was initially misdiagnosed with epilepsy. Antiepileptics were ineffective. He also had continuous musical hallucinations, which failed to respond to risperidone, and mild restless legs syndrome (RLS).
