World Sugar Situation

World sugar production in 1996/97 is forecast at a record 125 million tons, 2 percent above the previous year's output. This is the third consecutive year production will exceed consumption and increase global sugar stocks. World sugar trade is forecast at 35.5 million tons, up 1 percent from the previous year. Export supplies are higher in South Africa, India, Australia, the European Union, and Poland. Strong sugar supplies have pulled the world price of sugar down from a year ago. The United States has increased its total imports of sugar because of lower production in 1995/96 and 1996/97. World sugar consumption in 1996/97, adjusted for unrecorded trade, is forecast at 122.9 million tons, up nearly 4 percent from the revised 1995/96 estimate.
