World Sugar Situation

World sugar trade is expected to rise dramatically this season. Sugar shipments in 1995/96 are revised up by more than two million tons, mostly because of larger export supplies in Cuba, Brazil, and Thailand. China, Pakistan, the United States, Russia, and Turkey account for most of the increase in the 1995/96 import estimate. World sugar production and consumption will also increase at a strong pace in 1995/96. Record sugar crops in major producing countries such as India, Thailand, Brazil, and Mexico have boosted production this season. World sugar consumption in 1995/96, estimated at a record 119.0 million metric tons, is up 4 percent from consumption in 1994/95. Major consuming countries (mainly India, the United States, China, and Brazil) demanded increased amounts of sugar in 1995/96. Although world sugar production is forecast to decrease slightly in the upcoming season, the 1996/97 sugar trade and consumption estimates are forecast to continue to increase.
