Non-ferrous metals major Inco may be about to close its only copper refinery,Copper Cliff,because of the high cost of running the elderly plant.The refinery produces 115,000 t/y of copper cathode and a comparable amount of sulphuic acid.Inco has had the refinery at Sudbury,ON under the microscope for some time and has made efforts to cut operating costs.However,its production is reckoned to be far more expensive than competitors' operations.
