Meeting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards are at the forefront of most automotive companies' agendas, it seems. STAMPING Journal columnist Bernard Swiecki addresses the topic in this issue's Automotive Intelligence column, p. 26. Most recently the EPA and the NHTSA of the U.S. Department of Transportation have been ordered to start planning a new fuel economy standard for levels of greenhouse gas emissions for 2017 to 2025. Swiecki predicts that if the most aggressive standard goes into effect, this will raise the average to 62 MPG by 2025, including trucks.Challenges to meeting these new ambitious standards are plentiful—including costs—he contends.
