Platelet Dysfunction Associated With Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia in Dogs

Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a hemostatic disorder that commonly occurs in dogs. The function of platelets of canine ITP is not understood. The ability of serum platelet-associated antibodies to induce platelet dysfunction was studied indogs with ITP Platelet aggregation was evaluated after serum from 5 healthy dogs or from 15 dogs with ITP was added to platelet-rich plasma from a healthy donor dog. Aggregation responses to adenosine diphosphate (ADP), thrombin, and collagen/epi-nephrine were determined as the maximum aggregation seen after 2 minutes. Aggregation experiments were then repeated with all 3 agonists after im-munoglobulin (Ig)G from healthy dogs or dogs with ITP was added to platelet-rich plasma.
