Future modular-designed cylinder heads for Volkswagen diesel engines must be able to withstand highest operating loads. To meet the necessary requirements, casting technologies will have to be further advanced. More intensive use of casting simulation will enable aspects relevant to the casting process to be reliably forecast and development times will be reduced. In this context, the tilt-casting process is in the focus of attention as a means to achieve low-turbulence mold filling, controlled solidification and fine-grained microstructures. This article features examples demonstrating how component specifications can be reliably achieved by application of innovative casting technology and economic tool design. By creating common parameters and interfaces, a standardized casting process can be implemented.
