Ag Alternatives offers diverse production options

Offering various options to its customers, Ag Alternatives LLC is aptly named. These options include contract production of a diversity of seed crops and custom-tailored training and consulting programs. In addition, the company conducts applied research to improve seed production capabilities and efficiency. Established in 1985 by Mike Chilton, Turner, Oregon, Ag Alternatives has offered seed production capabilities in some of the Pacific Northwest's premier seed growing areas - Oregon's Willamette Valley, Madras and the Columbia Basin. Over the last year, with the acquisition of Ag Alternatives by Tyler Clark, Sedro-Woolley, Washington, the company has expanded production in the Columbia Basin. It may also expand into the Skagit Valley of Washington State in the future. (Editor's Note: Nearing retirement, Chilton is a partner in the company and serves in an advisory role.) First, some background. Together, Clark and Chilton offer several years of international seed industry experience. Prior tobuying Ag Alternatives last year, Clark worked for Alf Christianson Seed Co., the Mount Vernon, Washington-based vegetable seed company which was recently acquired by Sakata Seed. Clark began working at Alf Christianson in 1988 as international sales manager and while there held a variety of positions as the company rapidly grew.
