IPTV has the potential to enable the provision of an array of connected services, but network operators remain cautious. The advent of IPTV has been expected to act as an enabler for a number of opportunities for network operators to extend their activities within the digital home. Telecom operators' point-to-point infrastructure means they are able to provide personalised and interactive services to the home, which has paved the way for services such as addressable advertising. Extending services to encompass other devices in the home and embrace the world of fixed-mobile convergence would seem to be the next step. This would blend established IPTV services (including broadcast and interactive TV, DVRs and personalised advertising) with advanced capabilities such as the distribution of music, pictures, video and home security surveillance. And all of these can be pushed to any point within the network either within the home, or the Wider Area Network (WAN) covered by the operator.
