No one ever plans to have an accident, but often people don't adequately plan or act to prevent one. Call it carelessness or use the legal term, negligence-either way, in a scrapyard, that can be disastrous. When a worker is injured or killed on the job, first and foremost, it's a disaster for the worker and his or her family. Second, it can be a disaster for the company: A yard that has ignored a safety problem or willfully defied safety regulations can face enormous fines and other penalties. And companies facing criminal prosecution or civil suits can face months or even years of doing business without disturbing the scene of the accident, which can put essential pieces of equipment out of commission for significant periods of time.
