On July 21, the U.S. Department of Commerce denied the petition filed by I the Copper & Brass Fabricators Council and the Non-Ferrous Founders' Society seeking export controls on copper and copper alloy scrap. ISRI applauds this decision. After all, we should not fight alleged unfair trade practices abroad with our own unfair trade practice here at home. Imposing export controls would have done just that. (Copies of the decision and ISRI's position on the petition are available at www.isri.org/exportcontrols.) Moving forward, ISRI will continue to call on the Commerce Department, the State Department, and the U.S. Trade Representative to seek to remove export controls in place in other countries. Our defeat of export controls here was a team effort by every ISRI member who contacted the White House and legislators about this critical issue. These "grassroots" efforts were vital to our success, ensuring that elected representatives understood the issue in local terms. A huge thank you goes to every ISRI member who called or wrote our government's leadership. Your efforts truly made a difference.
