Extracorporeal shock wave therapy for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis.

In this issue, we examine a study published in 2005 in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery that examines the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy without local anesthesia for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis. Although lateral epicondylitis is traditionally managed nonoperatively, the authors of this study sought to determine the effect of shock wave therapy on lateral epicondylitis.Using a randomized, mul-ticenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled model, patients were randomized into an active treatment group (56 patients) or a placebo treatment group (58 patients).
