Articulating Antibiotic Spacers: The Standard of Care for an Infected Total Knee Arthroplasty

The most effective treatment for the devastating complication of deep infection in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is prevention. Protocols for reducing infection rates include use of perioperative antibiotics, personal isolator suits for surgical personnel, clean air operating room, efficient surgery, and copious irrigation throughout the procedure.Special considerations should be made for patients at high risk for infection, such as patients with diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and history of infection, as well as institutionalized patients.
