EIA spotlights rise in 2009 oil, gas proved reserves

U.S. natural gas proved reserves increased 11 % in 2009 to 284 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), the highest level since 1971, according to data released at the end of November 2010 by the U.S. En- ergy Information Administration. Leading the growth spurt were Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, adding significant proved reserves of shale gas during 2009. Louisiana shale, and Pennsylvania, which contains the Marcellus shale, nearly doubled reserves with net increases of 5.2 Tcf and 3.4 Tcf, respectively. These increases occurred despite a 32% decline in the natural gas wellhead prices used to assess economic viability for 2009 reserves, compared with the prices used in reserves reporting for 2008.
