A fter being shunned due to political pressure in its acquisition attempt of U.S.-headquartered Unocal Corp. in 2005, Chinese national oil company CNOOC Ltd. tried again in 2010 with a slightly different approach to gain access to American assets-and succeeded. This time it claimed a 33% nonoperated interest in Chesapeake Energy Corp.'s Eagle Ford oil assets in Webb, Dimmitt, LaSalle, Frio and McMullen counties for more than $2 billion in cash and drilling carries.
