PICASSO CERAMICS: THE ATTENBOROUGH COLLECTION

On a sunny afternoon driving past families in their Sunday-best saris and shalwar kamiz I visited the collection of Picasso ceramics gifted to the museum by Richard and Sheila Attenborough to commemorate the lives of their daughter and granddaughter who perished in the Asian Tsunami in 2004. The Attenborough family have been collecting Picasso ceramics since 1954 when, on holiday near Vallauris, they found Picasso Editions at affordable prices and made their first purchase, an ashtray costing thirty francs. There are over one hundred works in this informative exhibition, representing two-thirds of the pieces the Attenboroughs have continued to collect over a period of fifty years and covering the whole period of Picasso's ceramic oeuvre. Beautifully displayed and often showing their backs, it is great to see the pots close-up, in reality rather than in print.
