Salt Glazing is a well illustrated book of two halves. The first is a history of the process, with descriptions of the products and kilns. The chapter on environmental issues cites some of the most recent research and it seems that there are no problems with salt glazing after all. Where did all the health and safety issues come from? This is not a process for the dilettante or faint hearted. Part of its appeal is that you cannot buy it readymade by pottery suppliers and it is therefore a process for the serious maker. The second half describes how twenty-five current practitioners primarily from the UK and North America and about a third from Europe and Australia, use salt glazing. There are wonderful examples-Walter Keeler, Michael Casson and Byron Temple-as well as some names new to me, but one or two look out of place in such illustrious company. The text is a mixture of commentary by the author and quotes from the potter. I would have liked to hear more of the original voice and was curious to know their loss rates and values compared to other processes.
