In "Epiretinal Membrane Removal in Eyes With Good Visual Acuities" (2005;25:875-882), Dr. John Thompson presents an argument for removal of epi-macular proliferation (EMP) in eyes with preoperative visual acuity of 20/50 or better. He reports no complications other than the known risks associated with the same surgery at lower levels of acuity, i.e., progression of nuclear sclerosis. In his series he notes a mean improvement of one line of acuity at final examination, better in preoperatively pseudophakic than phakic eyes, and notes, "Patients who had epiretinal membranes removed with relatively good preoperative acuity were pleased with the results and noted improved visual function, even in eyes that showed no improvement in Snellen visual acuity."
