Australian Government Introduces Price on Carbon

On November 8, the Australian government passed laws inits effort to combat climate change and limit greenhouse-gasemissions that would impose a price on carbon emissions.This legislation sets a fixed carbon tax of Aus$23(US$23.52) per tonne on the country’s top 500 polluters ef-fective July 2012, according to a November 8 Reuters re-port. After that, the system will shift to an emissions tradingscheme, effective July 2015. The plan will also require thatcompanies to have a permit for every ton of carbon theiroperations emit.
