NOSE Design was tasked with creating a cosy and truly Norwegian experience for NSB's new Flirt trains. With local and national authorities attempting to create genuine competition among rail operators through the open tendering system, Christian Harbeke, partner at NOSE Design, says design and branding have become increasingly important for rail operators. "Branding is a vital means for operators to differentiate themselves from their direct competitors and offer rail passengers a practical and pleasant travel experience," he says, "In many markets, however, individual motorised transport is, in fact, the competition for the rail operators. In this situation, therefore, it has become ever more important not only to attract the attention of consumers through marketing measures and to capture it through an attractive exterior design, but also to communicate with rail passengers during their journeys at an emotional level through the interior design."
