Marioff presents its latest innovation, a pop-out sprinkler designed especially for rolling stock. Passenger compartments on rolling stock that are protected with an active fire protection system typically utilise equipment that sprays water mist through open spray heads. However, spray heads are normally reserved only for applications such as machinery spaces. Marioff contends that it would instead be logical to utilise sprinklers, if only you could overcome the traditional sprinkler's main downside - vulnerability to vandalism. The company has therefore devised a special solution tailored for the rolling stock environment, the new Hi-Fog pop-out water mist sprinkler, which was launched in September 2010. Hi-Fog systems are of the twin-fluid, single-pipe type, employing potable water as the suppressant and pressurised nitrogen or compressed air as the atomising media. An electric signal is required to release the actuator valve if automatic or remote activation is used. In standby mode, water cylinders and the tubing network are not pressurised, Marioff says that cylinder unit systems have been approved by Factory Mutual and VdS Schadenverhutung for the protection of machinery spaces, turbine enclosures and special-hazard machinery spaces.
