Middleton Engineering is best known for developing a series of semi-automatic and fully automatic conveying and baling systems capable of compressing paper, board, cans and PET into manageable, easily transportable bales, which take up one third of the space required by their loose formats. The balers can be found in distribution centres, supermarkets, retailoutlets, warehouses, paper mills and recycling centres nationwide where many operate 24/7 processing up to 20 tonnes an hour. Middleton has also developed a polystyrene shredder baler for expanded polystyrene packaging. This machine breaks polystyrene into tennis ball-sized chunks which are then compressed and extruded from a 275mm square bale chute. The result is a product that is approximately 45 times smaller than the original item and that fits in a van rather than a 40-metre container. Being recyclable, polystyrene has a commercial value and can enable some users to develop another revenue stream.
