'Oh, Give Me a Home' . . . An Informational Ode to the American Buffalo

It is difficult to conjure an image that is more American than the bison. There are images that are just as American, perhaps the flag and the bald eagle, but not more so. In the 200 years since the Lewis and Clark expedition, the original bison herdsthey found roaming the Great Plains were driven to near extinction and, through conservation, are making a measured comeback. In this column we take a brief look at the resources relevant to bison, including taxonomy, history, brucellosis, conservation, current agriculture, and the bison's place in U.S. currency.
