When illuminated with a bow-tie resonator laser, a microelectromechanical-systems (MEMS) grating light valve can yield an unprecedented 33 million pixels from a single display projection device. Using lasers as light sources in conjunction with a unique silicon image-modulator chip, Evans & Sutherland (E&S) has developed laser-based digital projection displays for large-format applications such as planetariums and simulators. The Evans & Sutherland Laser Projector (ESLP) produces more than 33 million pixels, or 16 times the resolution of 1080-progressive-scan high-definition television (HDTV).
