A harmless soil-dwelling bacterium that specifically targets tumours could form the basis of the next generation of drug delivery vehicles for cancer therapy.Clostridium sporogenes are widespread in soils, and thrive in oxygen-depleted environments, like the centre of solid, cancerous tumours. Spores of the bacterium are injected into patients and grow only in tumours where a specific bacterial enzyme is produced.
