The accidental garden

Six YEARS AGO, when Jenny Napier and her husband Bob moved to Great Barrier Island on the outer edge of the Hauraki Gulf, 90km north-east of downtown Auckland, she was determined their sloping bush-clad section was going to be easy maintenance. "I said, I'm not going to have a garden up there'." She scoffs at herself now as she surveys the profusion of colour, paths and plantings that have almost taken over the entire 1200sqm section. The kaleidoscopic, whimsical garden she has created is now a popular stop on the island's annual Spectacular by Nature garden tour.
