It was a warm, sunny spring day. I will always remember that day, especially since it was so cold and blustery the day before. I had just finished a consultation with the high-risk antepartum home care project at the regional medical center. The director called with an urgent request. Would I be willing to visit a mother who lived near my home? It wouldn't take much of my time. Without thinking, I said 'sure'. Spring break was the next week; I would be out of school with no teaching responsibilities. I asked about the mother I was to see. The director hesitated, 'Well, it really is more the newborn that has the problem... And, well, with your knowledge in perinatology, I thought you might be the best choice to help this couple through this awful time.' Awful time?
