Although I am not trained in peripheral cannulation, I found this a relevant and useful article. It is important to demonstrate understanding of the reason for cannulation of specific veins, the most suitable device, and the care and removal of the device. The description of the various veins available for cannulation was useful and was reinforced by my research of the anatomy of the main veins and the advantages and disadvantages of each. It was interesting to note that the metacarpal veins, although more accessible, are inappropriate for older patients, who comprise 75% of my caseload.Information about care of the cannula was particularly relevant. It was useful to note that, when not in use for 24 hours, the cannula should be flushed with 0.9% sodium chloride to ensure patency. The specific pulsated (push pause) flushing technique described was of great value.
