Less than a month ago Jean White took over as chief nursing officer for the 34,000 registrants in Wales. She admits that she is replacing her predecessor Rosemary Kennedy during challenging times as the NHS attempts to cope in the troubled financial climate.'Many nurses and midwives are seeing pressures where they work,' she says. 'Patient throughput in hospital settings has speeded up and caseloads have increased in the community. There are a lot of pressures in the system.'My main challenge is to support nurses and midwives to deliver person-centred care consistently. That is the bottom line.'
