The increase has been widely publicised and attracted a great deal of comment - almost entirely negative - but that will only marginally mitigate the shock and resentment at such a hefty sum being given every year to such an inefficient and unaccountable body. Nurses cannot go onto uSwitch or similar service and find a cheaper alternative that deals with fitness to practise cases swiftly. Nor do those who pay for the NMC have any say in who should be on it - nurses and midwives have to sit back and take the medicine it dispenses.
