I FELT LET DOWN BY MY MENTOR AFTER AN INCIDENT WITH A VIOLENT PATIENT

My second placement in my first year of training was on an acute medical ward. I was working a night shift when my mentor asked me to check the blood pressure of a male patient with advanced cancer.I was happy to have the opportunity to practise some of the skills I had learned during my first placement, so I approached the patient and asked for his consent to take his blood pressure. The patient did not respond, but I knew that he could hear me, so I again asked for his consent while showing him the blood pressure cuff to illustrate what I wanted to do.
