Marie Sklodowska-Curie as a role model for scientists

Marie Sklodowska was born in Warsaw, the fifth child of the patriotic Sklodowski family. Her father taught mathematics and physics, while her mother was the headmistress of a girls' school. Mania (as she was called-pronounced man-ya) had an excellent memory and a wide range of interests. Her mother died when she was a small girl. Two years earlier her eldest sister, who had often looked after Mania, had died of typhus [2].
