While noise can disturb sleep, and sleep deprivation is likely to reduce productivity in school and in the workplace, for example, identifying the potential mechanisms by which noise impacts productivity will require more work, according to an extensive literature review and analysis conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory under contract to the United Kingdom (UK) Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra). Researchers identified different sources of noise, their effects on individuals, the mechanisms that might link the effects of noise disturbances to a loss of productivity, and the possible resulting loss of productivity. For example: night-time transportation or neighbor noise could disturb sleep, resulting in short-term memory loss and impaired concentration, which causes errors or inefficiencies in the workplace and reduced productivity.
