Steel exports increased through first half

U.S. exports of steel through June totaled 2.75 million tons, 2 percent higher compared with the same period in 1995, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reports. Canada and Mexico accounted for 61 percent of the exports. Shipments to the European Union (EU) totaled 226,000 tons. Taiwan imported 142,000 tons of steel from the U.S.; Korea, 97,000; and Japan, 63,000. American steelmakers exported 395,300 tons of steel in June, down by 16 percent from May.
