Sustainable Steel Construction: Building a Better Future

The UK Government has made sustainable development a central plank of its social, economic and environmental programmes. Within this, construction has been identified as being particularly important and in April 2000 the Government published a strategy called Building a Better Qualify of Life, which sets out a path to improving the sustainability of the industry. The Steel Construction Sector has been addressing many of the issues of sustainability for a considerable time. However it was recognised that a consistent and coherent strategy is needed to focus resources and coordinate activities to maximise their benefit. Thus, the Steel Construction Sector Sustainability Committee (SCSSC), which includes representatives from BCSA, Corus, SCI and is chaired by Professor Roger Plank of Sheffield University, has responded to the challenge set by government, and has taken on the role of co-ordinating and developing a sustainability strategy for the steel construction sector.
