The SUV category grew rapidly during the '90s and SUVs are still quite popular in the U.S. However, a major change began appearing in 1999. Sales of traditional pick-up based SUVs stopped increasing and remained stable, though not declining, On the other hand, sales of cross/utility vehicles or CUVs originating from the 1996 Toyota RAV4 are growing rapidly and there have been many new entries in this category over the last few years. This can be seen as a revolutionary phenomenon, like that caused by the 1984 Dodge Caravan which opened the minivan market.
