The US Coast Guard is studying public comments on its plan to allow wastewater from hydraulic fracturing operations in the Marcellus Shale be moved on waterways to permitted disposal sites. The plan, if approved, would allow the "frack water" to be shipped on barges down the Ohio, Monongahela and Mississippi Rivers to permitted disposal sites in Ohio, Texas and Louisiana. The plan comes as states in the Utica and Marcellus plays consider limiting the development of wastewater disposal wells.
