Gas-heavy independent producers Encana and Devon Energy are both watching their liquids production climb and their gas production slip thanks in part to multi-billion dollar acquisitions in key US oil plays during the past two years. For Encana, the transition toward a liquids-rich production base accelerated last year when it established footholds in the Eagle Ford Shale and Permian Basin tight oil plays through a pair of pricey acquisitions collectively valued at $10.2 billion (NGW Oct.6'14).
