Relationships of ration formulation objectives among feed millers, dairy farmers, and feed policy regulators in Nakuru district-Kenya

Apurposiverandomsamplingsurveyof78respondentswasconductedinNakurudistrictbetweenSeptember2009andApril2010todeterminethelinkagesinrationformulationgoals.Specificallythestudyexaminedleastcostofingredients(LCI),maximummilkprofitmargins(MPM)nbsp;andminimumPhosphorous(P)-excretion(MPE);representingeconomic,productionandenvironmentalgoalsrespectively,asperceivedbyactorsinthefeedmillingindustry.Interviewscheduleswereconductedtosolicitdatafromthefeedindustryactorsona5-pointLikertscale.Datawereanalysedforcorrelationandmeandifference(One-wayANOVA)usingSPSSforwindows,Release10.01(1999).Apost-hocanalysis(Tukeyapos;sHSD),calculatedspecificmeanpairdifferences.nbsp;Rankcorrelationsweremoderateandsignificantbetween(LCIandMPM);p0.05and(MPMandMPE);p0.05,withinfeedmillers,between(MPMandMPE);p0.05withindairyfarmersandbetween(LCIandMPM);p0.05withinKEBS.TherewerenosignificantcorrelationsbetweenLCI,MPM,andMPEwithinNEMA.Correlationsbetweeningredientscostandnutrientexcretiondidnotexistfortheentirestakeholdergroups.Meandifferencesforeconomic,production,andenvironmentalformulationgoalsbetweentheindustryactorsweresignificantlydifferent(p=0.00).Resultsrevealedalackofstrongassociationsbetweenthethreecriticalrationformulationgoalsamongindustrystakeholders;representinganunderlyinglimitationindairyfeedmanufacturingdecision-makingprocess.Solutionstothislimitationwillincludeinnovationstowardsthedevelopmentofbroad-basedmultiplerationformulationapproachesthatattempttocollectivelyoptimisestakeholderneedsstep-wise.nbsp;Determinationofsuchrelationshipsisimportanttolivestockdevelopmentpartnersintheirefforttoformulatepoliciesinfeedmillingforthebenefitofsustainabledairyentrepreneurship.nbsp;nbsp;Note:nbsp;Thefollowingtermsarehereinusedinterchangeablythroughthestudy:nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Rationanddiettomeancowfeed;Needs,interests,andobjectivestomeanformulationgoals;andActors,keyplayerstomeanindustrynbsp;stakeholders.
