Cells that divide in epithelia do so with their spindle poles oriented at 90° to the apical and basal ends of the cell (that is, the spindle poles have planar alignment). However, the mechanisms that enable this specific orientation are unknown but are important to understand because a loss of cell polarity is a characteristic of tumours that arise from epithelial cells.
