摘要

I. INTRODUCTION, LOCATION, AND AIMS OF BOOK: This edited collection of twenty-four chapters is aimed at graduate students, early-career academics, or advanced researchers interested in exploring socio-legal studies of medicine and health. The editors have deliberately chosen to cast their net wide to bring together a range of contributions spanning medicine and health to enable new questions about law, regulation, and the state to emerge. Medical law has been less influenced by socio-legal studies than other disciplines. Yet, a socio-legal understanding of the field can bring fresh insight into issues of law and health by shifting the examination of law away from exclusively legal texts to one where law is examined in context. Historically, socio-legal studies have focused on areas of criminal justice, civil rights, and human rights. Although they have later branched out into other connected fields such as medical anthropology, bioethics, and feminist scholarship, the field of medicine and health has largely remained understudied. There has also been little attention paid to objects, media, places, and people as entry points of study by traditional legal scholarship.
