Many in the industry believe the root causes behind the industry's difficulties in attracting and retaining drivers are in the job's working conditions and lifestyle-related issues such as time away from home. We believe these difficulties are real but should not be dismissed as an unavoidable byproduct of a job that is too demanding and leads to quick dissatisfaction. The danger in such thinking is in placing too much emphasis on constant recruiting and not enough on things that drive long-term retention, such as better training and communication. It also ignores the fact that drivers, despite all their on-the-job challenges (and all the gripping one may hear) are actually not that unhappy in their jobs.
