Western Australian grower Gray Robertson applies variable rates of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) at seeding and varies nitrogen input throughout the growing season, according to available moisture levels. Working closely with Nick Ross, from Western Australian-based company, Precision Agronomics, Gray has been able to utilise his existing equipment, with the purchase of some additional components and the hire of a belt spreader for nitrogen application. Utilising a 2009 EM38 and radiometric survey ofhis farm, Gray combines his knowledge of paddock history and soil sampling results to determine variable rates of MAP. According to Gray, EM38 surveys confirmed the areas where root growth was constrained by rock over shallow laterite soils where MAP rates could be reduced.
